Data is the lifeblood of AI, but labeling data is a mission-critical bottleneck. It is often slow, costly, and prone to errors, particularly in high-stakes environments such as military operations. From spotting threats on the ocean floor to navigating drones in contested zones, accurate and adaptable datasets are non-negotiable. Enter Latent Assisted Label, a breakthrough that slashes labeling time and boosts precision, keeping AI sharp where it matters most. Hot off this innovation, we’re proud to announce our placement as a cohort winner in the U.S. Army’s xTech AI Grand Challenge. This is Latent AI’s third distinct xTech competition victory, solidifying Latent AI’s leadership in mission-ready edge AI.

Why it matters: Breaking the data bottleneck

Data quality and labeling are essential for performant AI, particularly when precision and speed are paramount. In military contexts, like unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs) scanning for explosives, datasets must reflect diverse, real-world conditions. As Alex Campbell, Navy service lead for the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU), noted, “The bottom of the ocean in the Red Sea looks different from the bottom of the ocean off Hawaii.” Manual labeling is too slow and prone to human error for life-or-death operations. The Army needed a solution to create accurate datasets quickly, even for low-power devices, and to label new data in the field to keep AI models mission-ready.

What we did: Latent Assisted Label in action

Latent Assisted Label

Latent Assisted Label, now available in Preview, transforms data annotation with AI-driven automation, flagging low-confidence results and learning from expert human input to deliver precise datasets with minimal effort. It integrates seamlessly with our Latent Ruggedized Toolkit and Latent Agent for field-ready AI updates, and will soon stand alone as a flexible solution for any MLOps workflow, including offline environments. Today, Latent Assisted Label is available as a plugin for FiftyOne.

Key mission-focused capabilities:

  • AI-driven automation: Automates repetitive labeling, cutting time while maintaining high accuracy.
  • Field-ready labeling: Annotate new data in real-time to keep AI models relevant in dynamic settings.
  • Expert-guided precision: Flags uncertain results for quick review, freeing experts for high-value decisions.
  • Flexible integration: Syncs with any framework or Latent AI tools for seamless model updates.

Simplicity meets mission success

In the field, complexity kills focus. Latent Assisted Label’s intuitive interface lets operators refine datasets in minutes, using NVIDIA Jetson and controlled via an Android smartphone. Field updates ensure AI remains accurate for tasks such as distinguishing between benign objects and threats, or updating models in real-time.

Why Latent Assisted Label stands out

  • Speeds up AI development: Slash labeling time to deploy mission-ready AI faster.
  • Field adaptability: Update datasets anywhere, even offline, for real-world relevance.
  • High accuracy, low effort: Automate routine tasks, focusing expertise on what matters.
  • Scalable workflows: Fit any MLOps pipeline for end-to-end efficiency and scalability.

Rooted in innovation and collaboration

Latent Assisted Label builds on our proven track record of pushing edge AI forward. At the core is our work on the US Army’s Project Linchpin, the first Army AI program of record set to deliver secure MLOps infrastructure. On Project Linchpin, our LEIP platform powers a trusted, scalable MLOps pipeline for secure AI development and deployment. As Bharat Patel, product lead for Project Linchpin, noted: “Project Linchpin is the Army’s path to delivering trusted AI.” Directly shaping Latent Assisted Label is our work in the xTech AI Grand Challenge contest. Here, we were selected from over 250 companies as a cohort winner. The AI Grand Challenge is our third xTech win, validating our focus on end-to-end ML lifecycles and edge-optimized solutions, such as rapid field updates. We’re also advancing edge AI with NVIDIA, as previewed for GTC 2025, and streamlining workflows with Latent Agent.
